The Associated Press has reported that Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick will resign from office after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice in relation to a sex scandal. The resignation is part of a deal the disgraced politician made with prosecutors that includes Kilpatrick serving four months in jail.

Earlier this year, Kilpatrick was charged with offenses that include perjury after he vehemently denied that he and his chief of staff, Christine Beatty had an affair. The 38-year-old Democrat, who was known as the “Hip-Hop Mayor” found himself painted into a corner when a collection of sexually explicit text messages sent between the mayor and Beatty were discovered, and later published in part, by the Detroit Free Press.

“I lied under oath,” Kilpatrick said in open court yesterday, as his wife looked on from the second row in the courtroom. The plea bargain puts an end to an eight-month scandal where many political figures from both major parties were calling for Kilpatrick to step down.

Kilpatrick will also lose his license to practice law and pay a $1,000,000 fine. He is also prohibited from running for any elected office for five years.

Beatty is expected to enter a plea bargain when she appears in court on September 11. Kilpatrick’s resignation is scheduled to go into effect in two weeks.
