The mayor of Batman, a city in southeastern Turkey that is known as one of the major oil-producing regions in the country, is bringing suit against Christopher Nolan, the director of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight as well as Warner Brother pictures for what the mayor believes is “naming infringement.â€

Mayor Hüseyin Kalkan is seeking royalties from the Batman movie franchise, and, aside from the infringement charges, Kalkan says the blame for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate can be placed on the psychological impact that the film’s success has had on the city’s inhabitants.”

This is not the first time that Kalkan has sued over the Batman name. In 2007, DC Comics confirmed that they had settled with the mayor and the city of Batman for an undisclosed amount of money after the mayor brought suit against the comic book giant for using the Batman name in its series on the Caped Crusader.

Ironically, the mayor of the city that shares the name with the crime-fighting superhero was later arrested on charges of using the money from the DC Comics settlement for unlawful purposes. Kalkan was sentenced to ten months in prison last year for using the money to fund terrorism.
