A story posted on Time Magazine’s website reports that the Japanese porn business is a booming billion dollar a year industry, and that one of the leading genres of dirty videos in the Japanese market is “elder porn”.

The report tells the story of 74-year-old Shigeo Tokuda, who has starred in around 350 adult releases of the course of a 14-year career. Tokuda’s most recent work is a video series that portrays him as a “tactful elderly gentleman who instructs women of different ages in the erotic arts.”

Japanese porn director Gaichi Kono spoke to a Time reporter about the appeal of porn that features older performers in his home country. “I think that as a subject, there is something that only an older generation has and the young people do not possess. It is because they lived that much more. We should respect them and learn from them.”

The Time story cites that, due to stress from job and career-related issues, Japan has a very high rate of sexless marriages, thus creating the greater demand for pornography. The report points out that, “although films featuring women in their teens and twenties are the mainstay of the industry, a trend toward “mature women” has become evident over the past five years.”

Ryuichi Kadowaki, director of Ruby Inc., a brand that mainly produces “mature women” titles, talked about the long-term advantages of producing content in the “elder” genre. “Adult videos with young actresses sell well only in the first three months after the release,” Kadowaki says. “On the other hand, ‘mature women’ films enjoy a steady, long-term popularity, which after ten years or so might lead to a best-seller.” Kadowaki went on to claim that the market for “elder porn” has doubled over the past ten years. He also talked about the financial advantage of using older stars in porn productions, explaining that a popular young actress can earn up to $100,000 per film, while a mature actress is paid only $2,000.

On the future of “elder porn” Kadowaki summed things up by saying, “In the view of the aging society, I think that in the future we will see a steady increase in demand.”
