Female porn stars are psychologically happy and healthy according to a recent report published by the Journal of Sex Research.

Dispelling common perceptions of female adult stars as being “damaged goods” and having low self-esteem, the study conducted by researchers at Pennsylvania’s Shippensburg University, Texas Woman’s University and Sharon Mitchell of the now defunct Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation STD testing, instead found that porn stars like themselves, have better body image views and are more spiritual.

The report culled data from 177 female adult performers, ages 18-50, with an average career in the industry of 3.5 years and all of who have been paid to appear in at least one hardcore film. More than one-third were either married or in a serious relationship, and 44 percent were single. The sample was matched to similar groups of women not in the adult industry.

Labels usually associated with porn stars including drug abuse, homelessness, poverty, desperation and being victims of sexual abuse — especially as children — were unfounded according to the report.  In fact, the results show no statistically significant difference regarding sexual abuse between the two groups of women.

“Stereotypes of those involved in adult entertainment have been used to support or condemn the industry and to justify political views on pornography, although the actual characteristics of actresses are unknown because no study on this group of women has been conducted,” the report said.

On a lighter note, the report said porn stars have more energy and sleep better. And nearly 70 percent love to have sex compared to only 33 percent of non-porn star women. What’s no surprise, adult stars started to have sex earlier than the norm — at 15 years old as compared to 17.

Of course, there was a dark side to the findings. The researchers found that sex workers abuse drugs and alcohol, a product of what they called “sensations-seeking” personalities.

Cynthia Graham, senior lecturer in health psychology at Southampton University, told England’s The Independent, “This study really challenges views about women who engage in sex work and the porn industry. Although the study had limitations, it is one of very few that has included matched controls.”

But feminist Dawn Foster had a different take on the findings. She said, “It is dangerous to generalize about a huge industry: women who are successful and in control of their careers in one pocket don’t speak for women in the less scrutinized parts. The study’s main objective seems to be to prove that not all women in porn are exploited: no one has argued that. But glossing over the exploitative aspects helps no one.”

EXXXOTICA Expo’s Charity Initiative In Edison, NJ Is A Major Success

The counts are in from the charitable effort, “EXXXOTICA Gives Back” at the New Jersey Expo Center during EXXXOTICA NJ, and they show a huge support from fans and exhibitors alike. With close to $5,000 in cash donated to the Little Ferry Relief Fund, nearly one-ton of food and supplies, and a highly-successful Red-Cross blood drive, the effort couldn’t have been more of a victory for the area.

The EXXXOTICA Expo took place just over a week after Hurricane Sandy tore through New Jersey and New York, and just two days after Nor’easter Athena took out even more powerlines with anywhere from three to eight inches of snow, winds and storm surges. While most residents of the area were still coping with the aftermath, thousands flocked to EXXXOTICA to let off some much needed steam. But it wasn’t just about having fun for these fans, as many took part in EXXXOTICA Gives Back — a program designed to pay it forward to New Jersey, an area which has treated this annual event for five straight years.

Three Expo Events, LLC, the organizers of EXXXOTICA, created an area on the show floor where attendees, exhibitors and stars could donate food, clothing and household items, as well as bid on one-of-a-kind items via a tricky tray auction and donate funds around the convention center hall.

Before the doors even opened on Friday afternoon, two pick up trucks filled with items needed by victims of the storm pulled up to the loading dock, setting the tone for a weekend of philanthropy by the EXXXOTICA faithful.

At the EXXXOTICA Gives Back exhibition area, adult film stars such as Lisa Ann, Tasha Reign, Tera Patrick, Mari Possa, Stoya, Christie Stevens and Allie Haze donated time from their schedules to raise funds for the charity effort. Major names from the industry such as Kristina Rose, Raylene, Raven Bay, XXX Church, the stars of Spartacus XXX, and others also pitched in.

Close to $5,000 in cash was raised and will be donated on behalf of EXXXOTICA to the Moonachie/Little Ferry Relief Fund. This fund was set up to aid the two Bergen County, New Jersey communities which were ravaged by flood waters leaving a path of destruction and many homeless in its wake. The final donation made by XXXChurch.com rounded the total to $5,000.

“We are so proud of our attendees and exhibitors stepping up to the plate and making the ‘EXXXOTICA Gives Back’ disaster relief drive a huge success,” commented J. Handy, Director of EXXXOTICA. “The support from everyone was overwhelming. It was an incredible feeling being able to contribute to help the community that has supported us so much over the years. We hope this pay it forward mentality continues until these areas are whole again.”

”That is so amazing!” said a spokesperson for the relief fund when informed about the donation. “Thank you so much for your hard work and the generosity of your attendees and exhibitors, as well as your company for organizing this. The money will help these towns. People need help. We have a firehouse to rebuild. Thank you again!”

Those wishing to help more can donate directly to the organization by sending both monetary donations and gift cards to: Moonachie/Little Ferry Relief Fund, PO Box 77, Wood-Ridge, NJ 07075.

The truckloads of donated household and food items were also overwhelming. These items which included non-perishable food items, household goods, cleaning supplies, toiletries, toys and more are being delivered to Edison, NJ area charities and food banks to help those in need.

In addition, as part of EXXXOTICA Gives Back, the Red Cross conducted a blood drive at the expo on Saturday afternoon. Dozens in attendance for EXXXOTICA gave blood to help replenish blood banks, which were wiped out by the storm.

“We have the best fans and exhibitors in the world,” added Handy. “The way they came through for their community is truly amazing and a testament that charity begins at home. It has inspired us to always have a charity aspect to our events for now on no matter what time of the year or city that we are in. The fact that we can do good like this definitely inspires our entire team.”

EXXXOTICA will be returning to the area next year with the debut of EXXXOTICA Atlantic City, April 19-21, at the Trump Taj Mahal. Later in the year, EXXXOTICA will also make its debut in Fort Lauderdale, along with returns to Chicago, IL.

Wicked Pictures Contract Star & Emerging Sex Educator Answers Questions on the Passage of the ‘Condoms-in-Porn Law’

Sexual wellness authority and Wicked Pictures contract star jessica drake was part of an interview discussing L.A. County’s controversial Measure B, also known as the Condoms-in-Porn Law, on CNN Saturday morning as part of the “CNN Newsroom” program. The CNN Newsroom interview aired Saturday, November 10 at 10:15 am EST. CNN anchor Randi Kaye interviewed drake, as well as male performer James Deen.

“From the performer’s standpoint, and the standpoint of a woman, I don’t like the idea of being told what I have to do with my body,” drake said on CNN. “We are tested every 14 to 28 days as performers. We are tested for HIV, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and I have been very comfortable with the testing protocols that we have had in effect.”

drake and Deen also described the misleading nature of Measure B. “On the ballot, it said ‘condom use,’ but then, later on, it says they can enforce the blood-borne pathogens law,” drake explained in the interview.

“It was a pleasure to represent our industry and Wicked Pictures to millions of CNN viewers who only see us performing, or don’t know us at all,” drake said. “We spent more than a decade developing a testing system to help keep our industry safe, and Measure B is a threat to our livelihood.”
