South Africa Considers Legalizing Prostitution For The 2010 World Cup
Posted on July 21st, 2008 by Genesis_DB under NewsPlans to legalize prostitution in South Africa during the 2010 World Cup soccer competition are being heavily criticized by religious figures as well as a number of other organizations.
According to News.bbc.co.uk, lawmakers in Durban, which is located in the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa, want to make prostitution legal during the soccer event. However, Thokozani Hlatshwayo, who is the African Nazareth Democratic Movement (ANDM) president, believes that prostitution goes “against the word of God.” Others who oppose the plan fear that, once the move is made to change the law, the change may become permanent. The opposition to the proposal also make the point that South Africa is one of the hardest hit regions by the HIV epidemic, and that the region would be putting more people at risk if prostitution was legalized.
A spokesperson for Durban authorities said that the fact that the sex industry would thrive during the World Cup could not be ignored, and that the plan to temporarily legalize the business included locating brothels in a central area, which would make prostitution more easily accessible and safer for locals and tourists.
The decision to make prostitution legal in South Africa during the 2010 World Cup has not been made yet and is still open to debate among those on either side of the issue.
