According to a report on Reuters.com, organizers for the 2008 Beijing Olympics brought 100,000 condoms for athletes to be able to practice safe sex during the 29th edition of the summer games.

Condoms have been available for athletes at the Olympics since the Barcelona games in 1992 as a way of raising awareness for AIDS. At the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia 70,000 condoms were available for the athletes and the supply was exhausted before the games ended, so an additional 20,000 were brought in as back up. For the Athens games in 2004, 130,000 condoms were available to the Olympians.

Of course, condom distribution is not limited to summer games. In preparation for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, organizers planned on have 250,000 condoms on hand, but after protests from religious groups the number of condoms supplied was reduced to 100,000.

Along with condoms, literature on HIV and safe sex practices are also available for the 10,500 athletes that are reportedly participating at this year’s games.
