According to a story first reported by ABC News 7 KGO in San Francisco, lawmakers in Sacramento are proposing a “porn tax” on California’s $4 billion adult entertainment industry. The tax would pertain to businesses that operate in the adult industry from the makers of porn movies, to the owners of adult dancing establishments. The proposed tax on the adult entertainment industry could be as high as 25% and could possibly bring as much as an additional $500 million a year to the state. Owners and operators of porn websites and adult merchandise stores would also be taxed an additional eight percent on gross receipts.

The porn tax is the latest proposed solution for generating extra revenue for the state’s hurting economy, but many in the adult entertainment business are citing that this tax unfairly singles out their industry.
In a quote published in the ABC report, adult entertainer and former California gubernatorial candidate Mary Carey had this to say about the tax proposal.

“I don’t think that’s very fair at all because there’s nothing wrong with what I’m doing. And there’s nothing wrong with the adult industry.”

However, Democratic Assemblyman from Los Angeles, Charles Calderon feels the tax is just, claiming that many performers in the adult industry wind up becoming a burden on the state’s taxpayers.  “When they come out, they come out with no skills. They come out unemployed. Many come out addicted. If they go on unemployment or on welfare or Medi-Cal, that’s a cost to the state.”

The report states that, if the tax hike were imposed, it is the San Fernando Valley, where most of the adult movie production business operates from, that would take the hardest hit. The report also points out that this is not the first time a special tax aimed at the adult industry has been proposed, and that the previous attempts have failed. This latest attempt will get its first hearing before a committee in two weeks.
