WLKY News reports that a Kentucky man is suing two doctors who removed his penis during a circumcision procedure.

In October of this year, Philip Seaton of Shelby County checked into the hospital to have his foreskin removed, and when he woke from the procedure he discovered that the entire organ was gone.

Last week, Seaton filed a lawsuit against Dr. John Patterson, who performed the operation as well as Dr. Oliver James, who administered anesthesia, and Commonwealth Urology, PSC.

Seaton’s suit claims that Dr. Patterson only had consent to perform the circumcision, and there was no consent ever given for the penis removal.

The doctors say they discovered cancer while engaged in the circumcision procedure, and that they made an emergency decision. However, Seaton’s attorney says that the doctors were wrong to make such a decision without seeking consent from their patient first.

“Sometimes you have an emergency and you have to do this,” said Seaton’s counsel. “But he could very easily closed him up and said, ‘Here are your options. You have cancer,’ and the family would have said, ‘We want a second opinion. This is a big deal,’”

According to the lawsuit, Seaton is claiming that he has suffered mental anguish, pain, and has lost the enjoyment of life. Seaton is also claiming that he never consented to receiving general anesthesia during the procedure.
