WNBC.com reports that New Jersey Democratic State Assemblyman Neil Cohen is being investigated for possessing child pornography on his office computer.

The veteran assemblyman, who is serving his seventh term was turned in to authorities, and investigators seized the computers from his Union, NJ office. Following the discovery of the alleged child pornography, Cohen was hospitalized Thursday night and placed under psychiatric observation.

The WNBC.com story says that the investigation was launched after the possibility that the illegal material existed on the assemblyman’s computer was brought to the attention of Attorney General Anne Milgram. Of the computers that were confiscated, at least one of them was assigned to Cohen.

One of the issues that Cohen is most recognized for is his work against child pornography, and in 2001 Cohen sponsored a bill creating a computer hotline to report child pornography along with other Internet crimes.

As of the reporting of the story a decision was yet to be made as to whether Neil Cohen will face state of federal charges.
