The China Daily reports that China’s first sex museum for women has opened in the Ren’ai Hospital located in the southern city of Guangzhou.

The museum, which includes eight halls with more than 500 exhibits, was created for the purpose of educating women on sexuality by disseminating information on human reproduction and sexual psychology. According to the report, women will be shown films and pictures imparting “knowledge on pregnancy, abortions and childbirth.” Men are not permitted into the museum.

China is inhabited by 1.3 billion people, which is one fifth of the global population. Authorities are anticipating that the sex museum will give women the information they need to make more informed choices in their relationships with male partners and in family planning.

China has had a one-child policy since 1979, and is expected to maintain the restriction until at least 2018.

The China Daily story says that widespread ignorance on sex issues has been seen as a major impediment to the Chinese government’s efforts to control the population explosion, and has contributed to the spread of HIV in recent years. There are currently an estimated 1.5 million HIV infected in the country.
