Last Sunday The Center for Sex & Culture hosted its annual “Masturbate-a-thon” at the center’s Mission Street headquarters in San Francisco, CA. According to a press release issued by the Center for Sex & Culture, the Masturbate-a-Thon is described as a “live group event at which participants will raise funds by getting others to sponsor them for the length of time they masturbate.”

Participants each paid 20 dollars to indulge in self-gratification during the nine-hour event. The masturbators of ceremony were Tom Orr and Nina Hartley, and other featured wankers included Madison Young, Robert Black and Dana Hayes.

A story published on sfweekly.com listed highlights of the Masturbate-a-thon that included the breaking of the world record for having the most orgasms by a man who brought himself to climax 31 times. Another world record was set by an erotic masseuse named Kitty Kat, who pleasured herself with sex toys for seven hours.

The Masturbate-a-thon is a fundraiser dedicated to supporting sex education and sexual safety. Proceeds benefit the non-profit Center For Sex & Culture.

Inside, the participants, who had each paid $20 for the privilege of masturbating in a communal setting, were free to move about three rooms, which were stocked with refreshments and decorated with plenty of masturbation artwork. In the media room, center founders Carol Queen and Robert Lawrence – who both brag doctorates in education in human sexuality – schmoozed on a velvet yellow and purple couch and educated newcomers.

The “wankathon” as Lawrence likes to call it, traces back to 1995, after ex-surgeon general Jocelyn Elder was fired for saying in public that masturbation was part of human sexuality and should “perhaps be taught.” That’s when folks at Good Vibrations, a sex toy business, designated May the masturbation month. Then in 1999, the Center got provided a space for group masturbation, and its been raising thousands of dollars at the event (as have spin-offs in Portland and the UK) ever since.
