Middle-Aged Brits See Significant Rise In Sexually Transmitted Infections
Posted on June 30th, 2008 by Genesis_DB under News, The MagazineA London report posted on Reuters.com claims that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have more than doubled among British citizens age 45 and over during the last ten years. Among the reasons for the increase in this rate cited in the report are online dating and sexual performance enhancing drugs.
Government Health Protection Agency researchers examined the number of patients visiting 19 sexual health clinics in central England between 1996 and 2003. And though the majority of the patients were younger than middle age, they found that 344 people over the age of 45 were diagnosed with an STI in 1996. In 2003 that number was 780.
The study, which was published in Sexually Transmitted Infections Magazine, showed that men between the ages of 55-59 were more likely to have a sexually transmitted infection than anyone else, while rates among women were highest in 45-54 age group.
The most commonly diagnosed STIs were genital warts, which accounted for almost half of cases, and herpes. The study also claims that the number infected with chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis also rose significantly.
