Actress and musician Gina Gershon’s litigation counsel have sent a certified letter to Vanity Fair Magazine Editor in Chief Graydon Carter and Conde Nast Publications accusing the magazine of making a “false and defamatory inference that (Gershon) engaged in an adulterous relationship with former president Bill Clinton.”
The article in question was written by Todd S. Purdum and is titled, “The Comeback Id”. The article appears in the July 2008 issue of Vanity Fair as well as on the magazine’s website.
The letter comes from the Los Angeles law firm of Lavely and Singer, and on Gershon’s behalf they deny that any such affair between their client and the former president took place. It states that the insinuation that Gershon had an “inappropriate sexual relationship” with Clinton is “absolutely false.”
According to the letter, the Vanity Fair piece refers to “recent high-end Hollywood dinner-party gossip that Clinton has been seen visiting with the actress Gina Gershon in California.”
Gershon’s legal counsel question why the writer never bothered to check with their client about the accuracy of what they call a “specious lie” and state that, “Vanity Fair was irresponsible at best, and reckless and malicious at worst. We demand publication of a retraction and correction.”
In an effort to set the record straight, the letter explains that- “Ms. Gershon has only been in the same room as President Clinton on three occasions, during which she was always in the presence of anywhere from approximately a dozen people to several hundred or more.”
Gershon’s counsel accuses Vanity Fair of not being interested in learning the truth, stating- “Rumor-mongering was substituted for fact-checking.”
The legal letter concludes by suggesting that “it would therefore be in Vanity Fair’s best interests to publish a retraction immediately.” The letter goes on to say “On behalf of Ms. Gershon, we demand the publication of a retraction and sincere apology. The immediate removal of the offensive false statement about Ms. Gershon from the Vanity Fair website is also demanded.”
