Mullen along with sitcums.com production partner Scott David had just been part of a glorious night that saw them win a large number of adult industry awards including Best Sex Comedy, Best Parody and the coveted Director of the Year (Body of Work) award for Will Ryder in front of a packed house of gorgeous adult industry stars, starlets, executives and fans, yet something seemed horribly incomplete.

Lost in the excitement of the bustling evening which including an unexpected win for Flight Attendants in the Best Comedy category and witnessing Not the Cosbys XXX tie for the best parody award, the usually smooth-talking Mullen was a bit out of sorts when he accepted the awards on-stage at the beautiful Pearl Theater inside the Palms Hotel & Casino.

“I completely blanked out and did not thank our biggest distributor Hustler Video from the stage,” Mullen confessed.  “It was a completely thoughtless error on my part and it actually took some of the excitement out of the rest of our night because those guys and gals at Hustler have been with us from the beginning and are a huge part of our team.  They deserved to be thanked.”

“You know it gets a bit stressful in Vegas and we were up for some pretty big awards so I guess that’s how it went on stage but Jeff’s taking it rather seriously,” offered David whose art direction and wardrobe are a big reason why X-Play is on such a successful run of blockbuster hits.

“Until you get up there on that big AVN stage with the Showtime television cameras and the bright lights hitting you in the face you really don’t know how it can totally stun your perspective, David added.”

“Scott David actually saved my ass when we won for Flight Attendants because after my little speech he jumped in and thanked our other wonderful distributor Adam & Eve Pictures but there was no time for him to do that later in the evening after Not the Cosbys XXX won because Thomas Ward who by-the-way won for Best Non Sex Performer for his amazing portrayal of Cliff Huxtable spoke to the audience instead of Scott,” Mullen said.

“I thought I would possibly get one more crack at the microphone for the Director of the Year award later in the night but that was not a trophy presented on stage I found out,” Mullen lamented. “So I had no way to fix my error.”

Either way it was a wonderful winning night for X-Play and their distribution friends at Hustler/LFP Video and also for X-Play and their other teammates at Adam & Eve Pictures.

“You know Drew Rosenfeld is the creative director over at Hustler and he’s been our friend long before we were making porn movies and he actually used to take a lot of jabs and negative comments from other directors and producers for working so closely with us when we were nobodies,” Mullen reminisced.  “Well, I don’t think anybody is questioning Drew’s vision now.”

“Yeah he stuck by us as did the entire staff at Hustler and we couldn’t be happier and want to thank them,” Scott David concluded.  “Both Jeff and I also want to throw a personal thank you to David Diamond who does such a great job selling our movies at LFP.”

Mullen who uses the name Will Ryder when he directs was later found sipping on a beer at the IVD Pornstarville Party at Studio 54 in the MGM when he said, “Next time I think I’ll have to have a few drinks before the awards show just like the good old days with Bo Kenney and SexZ Pictures and maybe, just maybe I won’t forget to say thank you to those that deserve it,” Mullen said with just a hint of a smile.

“Both Jeff and I want to also thank AVN and all of the voters for such an honor,” David stated just in case Mullen forgot to do so from the stage.

“Next time I’m bringing notes.” Mullen joked.

Here are some of my predictions for tonight’s big night in adult at the AVN Awards. Keep in mind that these are simply predictions — not who I think should win, but the way(s) I think things will go…

Best Actor: Herschel Savage (30 Rock, New Sensations)
Herschel did a dead-on Alec Baldwin, and in a parody crazed year, I think the Hall of Famer will take the prize.

Best Actress: Sasha Grey (Throat: A Cautionary Tale, Vivid) or Kelli McCarty (Faithless, Vivid)
2009 was the year of Sasha, and while Kayden turned in a great performance in The 8th Day, I think this could go to Grey. The other fave here is the former Miss America and soap star. I think this one could go either way

Best Director (Feature:) Brad Armstrong for 2040
Brad did a great job on this movie, and this is a strong category this year with Ren Savant’s The 8th Day, P.T.’s Throat and what could be a sentimental fave and dark horse (and very deserving candidate), the late, great David Aaron Clark for Pure.

Best Comedy: Operation: Tropical Stormy (Wicked)
The first big budget flick from Stormy and Wicked took the prize in that year, and this one could follow suit. The other possibilities here are Flight Attendants and Teachers.

Best High-End All Sex Release: Deviance (skinworXXX/Adam & Eve)
The second movie from the new company should and will win here. Upsets could come from either Performers of the Year or one or two other movies, but that would be a travesty for this critical and fan favorite.

Best Male Newcomer: Dane Cross
Aaron Wilcoxxx is the other possible in a thin year.

Best New Starlet: Kagney Linn Karter
She should take home this one as she a fave of many, but the other possibles here are Asa Akira and Riley Steele.

Best Non-Sex Performance: Thomas Ward (Not the Cosbys XXX)
No doubt in my mind he wins this for his dead-on Heathcliff Huxtable.

Best Parody: Not the Cosbys XXX
If it’s not that, I will simply say it can be any of these. Pick your poison here. All I know is this — that the title will have XXX in it.

Best Supporting Actor: Dane Cross (The Office: A XXX Parody)
I’m just taking a stab in the dark here. He was great as the Dwight character, people love that show. On the flipside, there are a bunch of great nominees here, so anything or anyone is possible.

Best Supporting Actress: Amber Rayne (The 8th Day, Adam & Eve)
Amber was simply brilliant, and hopefully the voters agreed. I’m surprised here that Misty Stone wasn’t in for Cosbys, but she could take a trophy for Flight Attendants or Penny Flame could for Throat.

Best Video Feature: The 8th Day (Adam & Eve)
I think it’s their year, although they’re facing stiff competition from 2040. It could be a coin toss between these two.

Director of the Year (Body of Work): Jules Jordan
He’s still the best in the biz at what he does. Some though could slide over to Will Ryder for the parody craze.

Female Performer of the Year: Misty Stone
I think she’s gonna land this one as she had a great year. Other possibles are Kayden, Tori Black, Jesse Jane and Kristina Rose.

Male Performer of the Year: James Deen
It could be two in a row for Deen. Other fave is Manuel. Dark horse possibles are Marco Banderas and Prince Yahshua who had a breakout year according to many.

MILF/Cougar Performer of the Year: Lisa Ann
She hands-down deserves this one. There, I said it. The only other one who can take it is the long underrated (when it comes to awards), Julia Ann.

Unsung Male of the Year: Derrick Pierce
That’s my guess at least.

Unsung Starlet of the Year: Shawna Lenee
I think that’s a solid pick if it happens. Other possibles: Missy Stone, Phoenix Marie and Holly Wellin.

Not Making the Hall of Fame: The “Nobody” in Georgia
The funny thing is he really thinks he should be in. He also probably thinks there’s an Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, Elvis is alive and well and living in Ocala, Florida, and that his opinion really matters to anyone.

XCritic.com just announced Ryder as their 2009 Director of the Year which came on the heels of CAVR also naming the X-Play director their 2009 Director of the Year.  Earlier this fall NightMoves presented Ryder with their Lifetime Achievement Award and before that, XBiz named him their 2009 Director of the Year for the movie Not Bewitched XXX.  That’s quite a blockbuster year by anyone’s standards.

This is all happening pretty damn fast,” Ryder said as he prepared to fly to Las Vegas for the Adult Entertainment Expo and the AVN Awards where his X-Play production house has 32 nominations including Best Parody, Best Sex Comedy, Best Director and Director of the Year for a bevy of top-selling movies such as Flight Attendants, Not the Bradys XXX Marcia Marcia Marcia, Not Three’s Company XXX, Not Married with Children XXX, Not Monday Night Football XXX, This Ain’t the Partridge Family XXX and Not the Cosbys XXX.

“Who knows if we’ll win anything but it sure as hell is fun going,” Ryder said.  “I can remember watching all of the great porn stars and directors some years back and just wondering if we could one day get up there and compete.”

In what is a bit of a surprise to Ryder, XCritic.com just named Not the Cosbys XXX as the best movie of 2009 with their annual Top Ten Porn DVDs of 2009 list.

“Having an interracial movie with a black family win an award for the best porn movie of the year is amazing,” Ryder rejoiced.  I hope our “Cosby Show” spoof inspires blacks and whites to unite and get into each other’s pants especially while in Vegas.  Jungle fever is a good kind of sickness.”

Along with production partner Scott David, Will Ryder and X-Play enjoy their status as a top-notch studio that has earned the respect and attention of others.

“I just saw an advertisement for Jules Jordan Video in AVN Magazine and it said in big bold print- ‘Parodies?  Not Here.  Only Serious Porn,” Ryder laughed.

“Damn, they’re a big-time company and that put a huge smile on my face because that’s a really impressive studio noticing that our movies are funny.  At sitcums.com we don’t take ourselves too seriously because we like to laugh.  We leave the serious porn to the others.”

AVN announced Wednesday that comedian Dave Attell will co-host the AVN Awards Show on Jan. 9 in Las Vegas.

Attell, named one of “The 25 Funniest People in America” by Entertainment Weekly magazine, will share the hosting duties with adult stars Kirsten Price and Kayden Kross at the 27th annual ceremony at the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Casino Resort.

“It’s an honor and privilege to co-host the AVN Awards,” Attell said. “It’s going to be a wild night and I can promise you one thing…If Kanye walks on stage, it’s only to bring the lube.”

Attell is known for his adult-themed material, earning him a reputation throughout the entertainment industry as “a comic’s comic.” He recently traveled to Iraq as part of a USO Tour and has made numerous appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “The Howard Stern Show,” “Later with Carson Daly” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

He also appeared in Chris Rock’s cult film Pootie Tang. Some of his other television credits include FOX’s “Arrested Development,” NBC’s “Ed,” HBO, Comedy Central’s “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” and his own half-hour, stand-up special “Comedy Central Presents Dave Attell.”

AVN founder Paul Fishbein remarked, “Dave is one of my favorite comedians. We wanted him to host our show for some time now and we’re thrilled that he’s coming to the Palms with us this year. His style of comedy is tailor-made for the AVN Awards.”

In 2001, Attell created and hosted the hit series, “Insomniac with Dave Attell” for Comedy Central. A travelogue show in which Attell went from city to city looking for late-night fun, The New York Times called the show, “a doubly rare beast, a comedy show without rancor and a travel show about the virtues of the American underdog.” To Attell, the Insomniac show was more of a cross between “Girls Gone Wild” and “Cops.” He taped four seasons of Insomniac, and then shot several hour-long Insomniac specials overseas in Japan, Germany, England and Brazil.

Once back in the States, Attell completed a 35-city theatre tour ending in Vegas, where he hosted a two-hour special for Comedy Central featuring Sean Rouse, Greg Geraldo and Dane Cook, a few of the most highly regarded comics in the country.

When he is not on the road, Attell makes regular appearances at the Comedy Cellar in New York City.

The AVN Awards Show highlights an adult industry weekend in Las Vegas that kicks off with the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo Jan. 7-10 at the Sands Expo Center at the Venetian Hotel & Casino.

Sprinkle in some perfectly-timed comedy from Randy Spears, Evan Stone and James Bartholet playing a homosexual flight attendant and you have the makings of a classic porno albeit one that’s possibly in bad taste.

Misty Stone listening nearby offered, “The more I looked at the script I realized that this movie pretty much offended every minority group on the planet.  “In fact they pretty much hit all groups, blacks, whites, Jews, Arabs, gays and even accident victims.  You name it and they make fun of it but actually with a wonderful spirit.  I’m so glad I made this movie, stated the gorgeous African-American actress who is now a regular cast member on Cinemax’s “Co-ed Confidential.”

“There were a couple of times I was invited to be on,” Kross explained, “but for various reasons, they fell through, so I’ve never actually been on the show. This’ll be the first one to go through.”

Kross will be co-hosting the Award show with Wicked Pictures’ contract star Kirsten Price.

“I’m so excited, both that I’m co-hosting the show, and that I’m appearing on Howard Stern,” she continued. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m obviously nervous—I have no idea what he’s going to ask me— but I think it’ll be one of those things I’ll never forget.”

The Kross/Fishbein segment is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday, or shortly thereafter, and the entire show will be repeated for the Pacific time zone, so Left Coast fans can tune in at 7:30 a.m. their time as well.
