There may not be an awards category specifically for it, but a couple of pounds of beef brisket saved the day for the Rocky XXX porn parody. I don’t know who played the role of the Jewish deli owner, but director Will Ryder can thank his lucky stars he was around. (The movie is available from Adam & Eve Pictures /X-Play)
Among the film’s DVD extras, during a Behind the Scenes interview, director Ryder and producer Scott David talk about the lunacy and improvisation necessary toward acquiring props. Especially if the call’s for a side of beef and a meat locker. Fans of the original Rocky would practically demand a recreation of the meat packing plant scene in which Rocky employs a side of beef for a body bag. This was a thorny issue Ryder had to contend with when considering his version.
“A real side of beef was insanely expensive,” notes Ryder.
“Then we went to a prop house. It was maddeningly expensive. It cost $500 to rent a side of beef. Our lighting director Tim Studley [also seen in cameo at the beginning of the movie] came up with an ingenious way of making this meat.
“He bought many pounds of real beef brisket from a butcher shop. Then he tied sandbags together, hung them, then wrapped and painted the sandbags red. Then he wrapped the beef brisket with the blood dripping. This thing hung there all day long.”
Ryder says he finally got around to shooting the scene about 7 at night.
“The second I called cut, the chain broke, and the beef brisket and sand bags spilled on to the floor. We just literally finished the scene.”
“One of the thing’s about Tim is, once he gets a project, he’s very intense, gets it done and just keeps that show going. This is one of the behind-the-scenes things you don’t know about,” adds David.
“It takes the whole crew to make these movies as good as they are. Hats off to Tim on that one.”
As far as the movie’s concerned, Ryder was inclined to think it was X-Play’s best effort to date.
“I know we’ve said that before with a lot of movies but we keep getting better and better. Rocky was a bigger challenge and a much different type of movie because we wanted to make it more like a film. We’re so used to doing these TV shows that it was really interesting to do one, more like a film, as opposed to a television show.”
“The first place we had to look was find someone who could actually play the character Rocky Balboa. We had a couple of choices. Tommy Gunn was a choice. [Gunn who hails from Cherry Hill, NJ would have been excellent as well.] In the end Ryder picked Anthony Rosano.
“It’s not easy to find porn stars or actors or can actually act,” Ryder goes on to say.
“Most people are in this business because they can fuck and suck dick pretty well.”
Ryder was particularly ecstatic about Andy San Dimas playing the part of Adrian, particularly with the wrinkle that makes her more glamorous as the story progresses.
“She really became Adrian. She was demure. She had the cat-glasses, the hats, the bulky clothing,” adds Ryder who got in a mild debate with David over the definitions of homely and ugly. Ryder preferred the word “homely” to describe the character San Dimas was playing.
“The waitress with a big mole on her face- now that’s ugly,” laughs David.
“But it’s almost impossible to make Andy San Dimas look anything but hot,” Ryder also observes.
San Dimas also played the Kate Jackson character in the Not Charlie’s Angels XXX parody for Ryder. According to Ryder, another performer deserving of attention for their work is veteran mainstream actor Jack English who plays Mickey.
“He got the whole Mick-fighter trainer character down perfectly. He’s an old time guy who’s been in Hollywood for years. He came in; he studied his role. I think he added the most realism out of anybody. He really made it feel like you were in a gym.”Ryder states.
The “gym” was The Hustler Studios converted to look like one.
“It’s fantasy land. There was no gym there,” offers Ryder.
“We created a gym. We brought in a ring and built it. Our biggest challenge was with the fighting. How do you go from a training situation where you’re in an old crusty gym in Philadelphia and convert that into an arena with thousands of people watching a championship fight?”
Ryder admits that going into the shoot, he had no idea of how to bring all of that off.
“I didn’t know how we were going to re-enact the fighting. I heard that Sylvester Stallone choreographed everything out; every move was scripted. We don’t have time for that. We’re trying to make a movie within a week as opposed to three months.”
To make matters worse, the fighting sequences were shot around 5 in the morning.
“We were all exhausted,” Ryder recalls.
“I can only imagine how the actors felt. We ended up blacking out the entire gym with 40-foot pieces of black fabric. Then we lit it very dimly and shot concert style smoke to give it an arena vibe. I think the fight sequences came out absolutely phenomenal.”
Although he had a couple of actors in mind to play Apollo Creed, Ryder says with Mr. Marcus it just felt right. Although Ryder almost went with actor Rico Strong.
“But Mr. Marcus had that swagger, also. Another guy who delivered the goods was Tyler Knight [Theo in the Cosby porn spoofs] who played the Clubber Lang character.
Ryder gives Knight credit as a versatile actor as well as a trained martial arts fighter. David particularly like the fact that Knight was willing to get his hair cut like Mr. T.
“I thought that was great.”
Playing a female TV reporter is Madison Ivy. Ryder’s of the opinion that Ivy’s a “blond piece of ass,” and, so, has been cast in many X-Play features – for a talent obviously picked up in graduate school. David describes how he trolls all the agency websites on the lookout for hot girls but always comes back to her.
“She’s a fun girl, a real good actress,” Ryder agrees.
“She’s wild, sexual and playful. That’s always good to have on a set because you always want girl who are sexually playful on set.”
There’s a bringing down the house scene in the movie where Ivy climbs naked into the ring doggie-style.
“I gotta tell you- that’s a scene that’ll make people cry,” comments Ryder who rues the fact that at his age, boners aren’t as instantaneous as they used to be.
“But I thought Madison Ivy in her sex scene with Jack Lawrence is absolutely fantastic. Jack has been in a number of our movies also.” [He plays the cop in the Bionic Woman parody that stars Bree Olson.]
Playing another TV reporter is Vanessa Naughty who interviews Rocky in the meat locker.
“While he’s beating the meat,” says Ryder drolly.
