Brooklyn Lee to Retire From Performing

Posted by Genesis_Lisa in News, Press Releases

Brooklyn Lee

Brooklyn Lee, the reigning XBIZ “Female Performer of the Year,” has announced plans to retire from porn.

Lee posted her intentions on the adult industry discussion forum, Adult DVD Talk, on Wednesday. Her agent Mark Spiegler also confirmed her plans to XBIZ.

In Lee’s post, she said, “… Also yes, I have retired. Off to other things and greener pastures. It’s time for me to focus on the bigger picture; my education. Just going to school and being me. All is well… the adult industry is simply no longer a place I belong or wish to be.”

Her post continued, “There has been some speculation that I quit because of my long-time boyfriend, who is a figure behind the scenes in the industry. I would love to tell you that I am a fully liberated woman who does what she pleases and can easily separate work life from home. I won’t lie to you. While the man that I love never once asked me to quit performing, I did do so in part because of him. When you reach a point where you loathe heading to set because there’s only one person in the world you have any desire to have sex with, it’s time to move on from sex work… so I did.

“I take with me many fond memories and unique experiences; I wish the very best to my friends that remain in adult. I came, I saw, I conquered… and now I’m done.”

Lee said to look for Vivid Entertainment’s release of its remake of Behind the Green Door, a movie in which she was the lead, this September.

“I would say that it’s the best work I’ve ever done. Nothing I could ever do could compete with it… so why bother?

“You can also see me in Deborah Anderson’s Aroused Project, on Hulu, iTunes and theaters near you. The whole thing turned out really beautifully.”

Lee was unavailable for comment at post time. However Spiegler said that the star had indicated she would perform in one more movie before bowing out, noting she is scheduled to be the lead in Evil Angel’s Voracious 2 which begins shooting later this month. Lee earned critical acclaim for her lead role in the original Voracious, an episodic web series directed by John Stagliano that also was released on DVD in 2012.

Lee has performed in more than 130 movies since beginning her porn career in 2010. Last week, she won a pair of honors at the 29th annual X-Rated Critics Organization Awards, taking home” Superslut” and “Orgasmic Oralist” trophies.

Spiegler said Lee has already enrolled in college on a pre-med track.

“You can’t do porn forever, and this is like planning ahead for the future and she will do well in school,” he said. “She’s very smart and really good at writing.”

GQ Features ‘The James Deen Workout’

Posted by Genesis_Lisa in News, Press Releases

main_308960k

GQ magazine asked James Deen how he stays fit to perform in porn scenes, publishing his insights online Tuesday in an article titled “The James Deen Workout: Why Looking Like a Porn Star is Easier Than You Think.”

Deen discusses how he maintains a low-carb diet “by personal taste” and reveals why porn sex is much more “strenuous” than sex at home.

“It’s a good workout,” Deen tells writer Bill Bradley. “All the positioning and weird things.”

The short Q&A is not the first time Deen has been interviewed by GQ. In their July 2012 issue, the crossover performer was featured in a lengthy profile.

Deen is the 2013 and 2010 XBIZ “Male Performer of the Year,” as well as the reigning XBIZ “Crossover Star of the Year.”

Vivid Courting James Deen for ‘Canyons’ Parody

Article compiled by: TMZ.com

Here’s a switch. Adult star James Deen has a chance to star in a parody of his own mainstream movie.

TMZ reported that Vivid Entertainment co-chairman Steven Hirsch has sent a letter to Deen asking him to direct and star in a film spoofing the Hollywood production of The Canyons that he starred in with Lindsay Lohan.

The letter said that Vivid’s been following the film with “great anticipation” and VividTV is interested in producing a parody version.

“It would be a first in parodies…the actual star of a mainstream movie also starring in an X-rated version of that same movie. How cool is that?,” the letter said.

Hirsch goes on to say that the project would be a great place for Deen to showcase his acting and directing talents for more mainstream exposure.

Vivid said it has already lined up a cast list of “hot women” to play Lohan.

Deen was contacted by XBIZ but had not responded by post time.

Looks like folks want to see for themselves how to get Kim Kardashian pregnant.

TMZ reported that since the pop icon announced that she and singer Kanye West are having a baby, sales on the Vivid Entertainment Kim Kardashian Superstar sex tape have gone trough the roof.

Kardashian made the tape with hip hop star Ray J.

Vivid told TMZ that the VOD purchases have increased 80 percent since last Sunday night, that represents the biggest bump seen since Kardashian’s wedding to Kris Humphries.

Even before the news about her pregnancy, West’s relationship with Kardashian has helped spike sales on the taper according to Vivid, that said both overall VOD and DVD sales have steadily increased every month since the two stars became a couple last spring.

Vivid was contacted by XBIZ but did not respond by post time.

Sex Party’s Fiona Patten to Run for Senate in Australia

Posted by Genesis_Lisa in News, Press Releases

158185_r3

Sex Party President Fiona Patten will run for a seat in Australia’s senate in the 2013 election, she disclosed to XBIZ this week.

Patten, who leads Australia’s Eros Association, the nation’s adult retail and entertainment group, last ran for a seat in the Senate in 2010 but couldn’t pull off a victory and trailed by only a few thousand votes.

“If successful in becoming a senator, this push would not only give our industry a political voice in Australia but also in some international forums,” Patten told XBIZ.

After the party’s first federal election contest in 2010, Patten claimed that the Sex Party was “now the major minor party in Australian politics.”

Patten’s run for office comes at a time when the adult entertainment and retail industries in Australia are on a steady climb, she said.

“We have an increasingly cohesive and mature industry that is nimble and able to meet the changing needs and desires of its customers,” she said. “Our dollar looks like staying very strong, which is bad for Australian business but great for international sites looking to attract a customer with a spare dollar in their pocket.”

As for national policy, Patten noted that while the government has pretty much shelved its “idiotic” ISP-based Internet filter policy, the online adult industry should stay vigilant.

“Other countries around the world are looking at options to ‘protect the children’ and submit to the wishes of fundamental feminism and religion,” she said. “For the first time we are seeing debate about Internet content in the U.N. Most countries do not have the protection of a First Amendment.”

Australia’s federal election is slated for late November.

Patten will be attending XBIZ 360 next week, as well as the XBIZ Awards to hand out the Eros award.

Wicked Pictures Contract Star & Emerging Sex Educator Answers Questions on the Passage of the ‘Condoms-in-Porn Law’

Sexual wellness authority and Wicked Pictures contract star jessica drake was part of an interview discussing L.A. County’s controversial Measure B, also known as the Condoms-in-Porn Law, on CNN Saturday morning as part of the “CNN Newsroom” program. The CNN Newsroom interview aired Saturday, November 10 at 10:15 am EST. CNN anchor Randi Kaye interviewed drake, as well as male performer James Deen.

The complete interview is on the CNN website here: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2012/11/10/exp-measure-b.cnn

“From the performer’s standpoint, and the standpoint of a woman, I don’t like the idea of being told what I have to do with my body,” drake said on CNN. “We are tested every 14 to 28 days as performers. We are tested for HIV, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and I have been very comfortable with the testing protocols that we have had in effect.”

drake and Deen also described the misleading nature of Measure B. “On the ballot, it said ‘condom use,’ but then, later on, it says they can enforce the blood-borne pathogens law,” drake explained in the interview.

“It was a pleasure to represent our industry and Wicked Pictures to millions of CNN viewers who only see us performing, or don’t know us at all,” drake said. “We spent more than a decade developing a testing system to help keep our industry safe, and Measure B is a threat to our livelihood.”

Before the election, Deen and drake appeared in a No-on-B ad, which is available on the news-and-information website The Huffington Post:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/19/porn-stars-jessica-drake-_n_1980663.html

Since 2004, drake has been a contract performer for Wicked Pictures, an adult-video company requiring condoms in intercourse scenes for more than 14 years. Although Wicked Pictures’ in-house policy requires condom use, the company joined most of the adult industry in opposing Measure B, which mandates emergency-room medical protocols for all sex scenes shot in Los Angeles County.

A fervent educator on sexual health and wellness, jessica drake writes, produces, and directs the video series jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex. The series has received excellent reviews from adult industry authorities including XBIZ, AVN and Fleshbot.com. The production jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex: Fellatio received the 2012 AVN award for “Best Educational Release” and jessica drake’s Guide Wicked Sex: Anal received the 2012 XBIZ award for “Specialty Release of the Year.”

As an advocate for safe sex practices and education, drake spearheads Wicked Pictures’ involvement in Adult Production Health & Safety Services, a program designed by the Free Speech Coalition to provide producers and performers with a reliable protocol and database for STI testing.

Continuing her commitment to sexuality education, drake writes a column for AdultDVDEmpire.com titled “Ask jessica drake Anything,” where she answers questions on love, sex, and romance each month.

“We lost the first battle on Measure B, but the discussion goes on,” drake said. “We are opposed to shooting scenes in protective gear, and we will continue the fight.”

Rocco Siffredi: ‘89 to 100’ Syphilis-Positive Porn Performers in Europe

Posted by Genesis_Lisa in News, Press Releases

rocco_siffredi_762b

Rocco Siffredi told XBIZ Friday that there are “89 to 100” adult performers currently infected with syphilis in three different Eastern European cities where porn is regularly shot — Budapest, Hungary, Prague, Czech Republic and St. Petersburg, Russia.

“We have a lot of positives for syphilis. We don’t really know where this came from, but I’m pretty sure it came from Russia before it came to Budapest in July,” said the 27-year veteran performer/director, whose namesake production company is based in Budapest and distributed by Evil Angel in the U.S.

“I heard of some people with syphilis in May in St. Petersburg. And during May I heard from Italian friends who were there that told me they had one or two cases of syphilis, so they had to stop working. But I guess the syphilis didn’t stay there. Somehow it spread out over to Budapest and Prague.

Siffredi said he estimates about half, or more than 40, of the infected performers live in Budapest.

“Most of the [big-name] girls, they all have syphilis, nearly all of them,” he said.

The adult production community in Budapest this week extended its voluntary moratorium on shooting films through Sept. 3 due to the outbreak.

“Everybody is waiting to see who is going to make a decision about what,” Siffredi said. “Now they have moved the deadline to Sept. 3. Everybody should make a new test.”

Siffredi said it was his understanding that most of the infected performers there were receiving injections. But according to the information that’s been disseminated there, Hungarian performers must wait at least two months before returning to work because they may still be able to transmit the disease, he said.

“Here you can catch it even if you get the treatment. For two months you are always positive,” Siffredi said, noting he is aware that in Los Angeles, someone who receives an injection is said to no longer be contagious after 10 days. But he doesn’t understand why the time windows are so far apart.

“In the U.S. it’s 10 days, here they say it’s 60 days,” he said. “I’m trying to figure out what is the real thing. In the end of the story, nobody can work.”

Siffredi said his estimate of “89 to 100” infected actually is from “around two or three weeks ago.”

“Then I heard the news about syphilis [in L.A.] and the stories with Mr. Marcus,” Siffredi explained. “It came much faster than what I thought. I really thought we could isolate it in Europe.”

Siffredi said from the information he has gathered in Budapest that “it seems nobody has the same way to cure the people.”

“On my side I decided not to work anymore until this is clear,” he continued. “Because syphilis is very, very heavy shit. It’s not like HIV, but if you catch it two times in a row, like if you catch it right now and cure yourself, and then catch it again, then it will become much harder [to be cured of it]. I was very lucky not to catch it.

“My father died in July, so I was last shooting in June before this whole mess started in July. I don’t want to take the chance since lots of people have syphilis, so what’s the point. I want to see how the doctors will take care about this.”

Siffredi said he thinks there should only be one central testing lab in every country where performers go and “all the tests should be visible.”

“That’s another problem here,” he explained. “The lab didn’t want to give a name for the people who were infected because of the rules, the law. So it’s difficult to understand who’s infected. And then we had a fake test here too in Budapest. We heard a few people had fake tests. Some Romanian guy was making a fake test.”

The outbreak in St. Petersburg may be the most severe of the three cities, he suggested. “So many people are infected over there because they never stopped working,” according to Siffredi.

Siffredi said that he has learned that the syphilis problem in Eastern Europe is by no means limited to the porn population, noting that he even called his doctor in Italy who told him there has been “a big parade” of people coming in with syphilis that don’t work in porn.

He pointed to girls doing too much private escort work outside of their porn scenes as the likely reason for the outbreak.

“This is my opinion that too many girls are doing double work because there is not too much work in the [porn] business like before. So they do some escorting,” Siffredi said. “When you get that blood test that’s valid in Europe for one month, and then do escorting one week and come back to the business without making a new test that would cause the problem.

“I know for a fact that many, many girls are escorting.”

Siffredi said that he’ll often call an agency and ask if a girl is available and they’ll tell him, “Oh, they are in Switzerland.”

“We don’t shoot in Switzerland,” Siffredi said.

He also said he had received two different phone calls from agents asking for his help in recruiting porn girls to travel to Switzerland for privates.

“I told them we call this prostitution, and I can’t help you,” Siffredi said.

The situation in Budapest is unlike anything he has previously experienced in his career, Siffredi added.

“Twenty-seven years in this business and I’ve never seen such a big mess in porn,” he said.

Siffredi also cited serious concerns about one production company that he claimed shoots orgy scenes with established porn girls and several dozen civilian guys who come to the shoots without being properly tested for STIs.

“They have to sign some kind of authorization they will be filming,” Siffredi claimed. “Those guys come with no test and have to wear a rubber. And after 10 to 15 minutes, everybody pulls off the rubber.

“I don’t understand. After the orgy, you test the girl again and more than enough of them, they have gonorrhea. I was really angry with the agencies that they permit this kind of thing. It seems now there is no more too much care about this business like there used to be. I don’t understand why this thing is happening. We shouldn’t be mixed with normal people [who don’t do porn for a living].”

Pink Visual Files Piracy Suit Against Operators of PornBanana, Shufuni

Posted by Genesis_Lisa in News, Press Releases

152941_r3

Pink Visual has filed a lawsuit potentially worth $16.8 million against the operators of PornBanana.com and Shufuni.com, claiming both tube sites freeloaded and streamed its content.

In a suit filed Friday at U.S. District Court in Atlanta, Pink Visual pointed to 112 copyrighted videos found on the sites operated by Cyprus-based UGC Internet Ventures Ltd.

UGC Internet Ventures and 10 John Does, the suit said, are not only enabling massive infringement by their users, they knowingly distribute, display and publicly perform the copyrighted works uploaded to the accused sites.

The defendants face claims of direct, contributory and vicarious copyright infringement over the 112 videos found on the sites.

“Like most tube sites, the accused sites contain a prominent link for users to upload videos, but the vast majority of videos contained on the sites are not user-generated, but rather comprised of professionally made, copyrighted content,” the suit said.

Pink Visual declined comment to XBIZ on the suit. UGC Internet Ventures operators were unable to be located at post time.

Axel Braun Directs ‘Expendables’ Spoof, Tera Patrick Cameos

Posted by Genesis_Lisa in News, Press Releases

tera1

Director Axel Braun is currently at work on Hustler Video’s This Ain’t the Expendables XXX, a spoof on the 2010 Sylvester Stallone actioner, set to street on Sept. 30.

The production, which flips the script on Stallone’s original tale of male rogue mercenaries out to overthrow a dictator in Latin America by casting its leads as females, stars Kimberly Kane in the role of team leader and features a non-sex cameo by adult superstar Tera Patrick.

“The plot follows the storyline of the original movie; with the difference that all my Expendables are hot chicks instead of aging action stars,” Braun told XBIZ. “There are stunts, gunfights, explosions, and a lot of humor. To be honest, the original movie provided plenty of material for a parody.”

Costarring in the film are fan favorites Andy San Dimas, Brooklyn Lee, London Keyes, newcomer Ana Foxxx and veteran stunner Kylie Ireland.

“I just wanted gorgeous girls who could seriously kick ass, or at least that looked like they could,” Braun said. “Kim Kane was the obvious choice to play the leader of the pack, and she did an amazing job with her character.”

Braun also had kind words for Patrick, who cameos in the parody as Stallone’s rival mercenary played by action star and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original. The part marks Patrick’s first appearance in front of adult cameras in six years.

“It was very special. Tera and I have been friends a long time, and when I decided to shoot this movie I thought it would be awesome to have her do a cameo,” Braun said. “Her charisma and her astonishing beauty definitely elevate the tone of this project, and her presence on set was delightful. She came prepared, conducted herself with her typical approachable professionalism and sprinkled some of that magic Tera Patrick stardust on the whole cast and crew.”

But unlike Schwarzenegger, who returns in a much bigger role in this summer’s Expendables 2, don’t expect Patrick to do the same should there be a sequel to Braun’s parody.

“As far as playing a bigger role in the sequel, I can tell you that Tera is happier than ever being a stay-at-home mom, and that this was just a wonderful gift to an old friend,” Braun said.

Torn

A Sneak-Peek of the Adult Couples’ Film Has Earned AVN’s Highest Rating

Award-winning adult entertainment studio, New Sensations has just released the highly anticipated trailer for Torn, starring Steven St. Croix, India Summer, Raylene, Tom Byron, Chad Alva, Samantha Ryan, and Remy LaCroix. The film is co-directed by Eddie Powell and Jacky St. James whose collaborative efforts have won awards at both AVN and XBIZ.

Torn marks the first installment of the company’s ‘Couples’ series which focuses on the trials and tribulations of relationships after the honeymoon has ended. The film, narrated by the character of Drew (St. Croix), centers around a man whose marriage lacks the intimacy and passion he craves and the choice he must make when a young art student enters his life and offers him everything he’s ever needed.

The film, pre-released to a handful of publications, has already earned the coveted ‘AAAAA’ review from AVN where guest reviewer, Paul Fishbein says, “Torn has the look and feel of a major motion picture but never loses the intimacy it needs to pull off all the elements (of the storyline). I can’t remember another adult feature in the 30 years I’ve been reviewing porn, which touches on this specific, universal subject with such grace and detail. This is a really great couples’ movie – one that I would encourage everyone to see, stock, buy on VOD, rent, trade, loan, recommend, tweet about, or sell. It’s affirmation that good features that aren’t parodies can still arouse and entertain.”

Porn stars use Twitter to go mainstream

Posted by Genesis_Lisa in Press Releases

Article compiled by: cnn.com

thumbnail

Once relegated to sleazy red-light districts and the darker corners of the Internet, porn stars are now gaining followings in a surprising place: Twitter. They are using the social media site to engage directly with their fans and build their individual brands

Twitter has opened up these porn stars fan bases like nothing the adult film industry has ever seen before,” said Dan Miller, managing editor of XBiz, an adult industry trade publication. “Since most mainstream pop culture publications don’t cover the porn industry (and) porn movie reviews don’t generally appear alongside reviews of big Hollywood movies … the adult industry has embraced Twitter as a way to reach out directly to fans beyond the typical porn consumer.”

Miller estimates that 90% of porn performers are on Twitter, and he believes it is essential for new performers to use social media effectively to promote themselves and build their “brand.”

Porn stars showcase all-American success?

“If you’re not on Twitter, you are definitely at a disadvantage right out of the gate,” he said.

Alexander Raymond Palumbo was one of the first executives in the adult entertainment business to embrace social media, first on Friendster, then Myspace and now on Twitter.

“Via our social media platforms like Twitter I’m trying to establish brand loyalty, like people have for a company like Disney,” said Palumbo, a social media strategist at Digital Playground, an adult movie production company.

Palumbo holds seminars for adult movie actors, helping them set up their accounts and guiding them on how to tweet in a way that will connect them to their audience by engaging directly with fans and showing some of their personal sides to their followers.

“I try to instill in performers that you should let people know who you are, invite them into your interaction,” he said.

Palumbo begins his work day by logging onto Twitter to gauge reaction from the fans to his company’s movies and performers. If viewers of a new movie trailer tweet that there is too much emphasis on male characters, Palumbo will make a call to the edit department asking for changes.

“Twitter is like an instant focus group,” explained Palumbo. “It’s not going to go away, it is the future. From our company’s point of view, it’s pure customer service.”

Social media is profoundly changing the porn business, according to Chauntelle Tibbals, a visiting scholar at University of Southern California who studies the porn industry.

“Before it was about pure fantasy: you didn’t have enough information to be real fans of performers,” she said. “But now you can become a true fan of a porn star.”

The performers who are successful on Twitter are the ones who open themselves up and share parts of their non-professional life with fans, allowing followers a window into their off-camera personalities.

“That kind of interaction is something you don’t see mainstream celebrities doing to the same degree,” according to Tibbals. “You don’t see Angelina Jolie tweeting directly to people.”

Many of the performers are surprisingly funny, smart and engaging on Twitter. While they all promote their movies, most focus more on their hobbies, current events and personal lives.

“You are seeing a different kind of relationship that a viewer has with a porn performer,” Tibbals said. “One of the things that comes with social media is the deconstruction of stereotypes.”

Social media has the power to change how the public views porn stars, according to Tibbals, and it may ultimately make porn more mainstream and socially acceptable.

Here are several adult film stars who are using Twitter to attract a wider audience:

Putting your ‘erotic capital’ to work

The Boy Next Door: @JamesDeen

James Deen is arguably the hottest male performer in the porn industry. At 26 years old, he has already appeared in over 1,200 movies.

He has made a name for himself by defying stereotypes about male porn stars: he comes off as a funny, slightly goofy boy-next-door. His non-threatening demeanor has made his films popular with younger woman and has led him to more mainstream opportunities.

Deen is currently working on a Hollywood movie called “The Canyons,” in which he is co-starring with Lindsay Lohan. The film is directed by Paul Shrader, who is known for writing Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The Last Temptation of Christ. The movie is slated to premier in 2013.

Deen credits Twitter with helping his transition to mainstream films.

“I think a lot of the mainstream thing has to do with Twitter,” he told CNN. “People look at me and they say, ‘He’s not a porn star, he’s just a nice guy.”

His approach to Twitter is simple: be yourself.

“I like to keep my Twitter very personal and used as a random outlet for my feelings,” Deen said. “I see no reason to be involved except to be myself.”

Despite his non-commercial approach to Twitter, he said being an effective tweeter is an essential part of his business.

“The way the world is going, you have to be able to communicate with your market, know about your demographic, know what people are clicking on and then communicate back to them,” Deen said.

The Internet’s Girlfriend: @danadearmond

Dana DeArmond describes herself as a “pornographer of the people” and is one of the most accessible adult performers on Twitter. She responds to most of her followers who post a comment or question, often with a smart-alecky remark.

Dana DeArmond uses humor to make a personal connection with her Twitter fans.
Dana DeArmond uses humor to make a personal connection with her Twitter fans.

“People like to laugh and they like to know that people who are sex workers can also be smart and funny,” said DeArmond, who occasionally performs stand-up comedy around Los Angeles.

DeArmond, 33, says the porn world is extremely competitive and she uses Twitter to differentiate herself from other performers by interacting directly with her fans.

“I’ve developed the moniker ‘the Internet’s girlfriend’ and tried to make a more personal connection with the people who found me and followed me,” she said. .

“It’s something I’ve used in my branding. It’s like ‘OK, if you don’t have a real girlfriend you can pretend I’m your girlfriend on the Internet and I won’t treat you like a customer.’ That’s how I brand myself.”

DeArmond describes the porn industry as an “ever-changing animal”: viewers’ relationship with the product and their expectations of the performers are “constantly evolving and now requires a much more personal approach by performers.”

“Porn is not a utilitarian thing; if it were there would already have been enough porn made forever,” she said. “People have a connection to it and Twitter helps me make that connection.”

The Smartest Woman in Porn: @Kayden_Kross

Perhaps the most surprising porn figure to emerge on Twitter is Kayden Kross. With her dyed blonde hair and pouty lips she certainly looks the part of an adult film star. When she’s not making porn movies, Kross tweets about her very non-pornographic passions: books and horses.

Kayden Kross credits Twitter with her success in the adult film industry and beyond.

“People seem to be surprised with the things I’m into,” she told CNN.

She often tweets about her favorite authors, David Foster Wallace and Don DeLillo. Between shoots in the San Fernando Valley, she travels to New York where she is taking a series of writing classes with legendary editor Gordon Lish, noted for his work with authors Raymond Carver and Richard Ford.

“The porn people could care less who I’m reading,” Kross said. “I have a slim sliver of fans based on a common passion for books and the written word. Those are who I interact with.”

She is working on a novel set in the world of porn and posts essays on her website and tweets them out to her followers.

“If you’re interacting with people, you’re putting part of your soul into it,” she said. “The people that understand me the best are people into writing.”

Back in Los Angeles, Kross enjoys spending time with her horses. In April, her mare Regina gave birth and Kross tweeted throughout the process, posting pictures and even asking her followers to help name the foal. Despite the situation having nothing to do with her porn life, her Twitter followers were with her all the way, tweeting congratulations and piping in with suggestions for names. She ultimately settled on the name Maya.

Although many of her tweets are on her hobbies, Kross says that Twitter has been the key to her success in the porn world.

“I was largely unsuccessful up until Twitter came along because I’m very shy … and it came through in my movies,” she said. “But with Twitter, people see a different side of me and they see it in my movies.”

Twitter allows Kross to defy people’s preconceived notions of what porn stars are like and be more comfortable both on camera and off.

“Twitter has made me more confident as a person and a performer,” she said.

XBIZ is pleased to announce plans for an unprecedented series of six grand-slam events dubbed XBIZ 2013 that will kick off the New Year Jan. 9-12 in Los Angeles, taking attendees on a 360-degree journey into the heart of the industry to decode its future, ignite commerce and spotlight success on center stage at the most extravagant awards show in industry history, the 2013 XBIZ Awards.

Set to feature an elite group of industry icons, fearless trailblazers and creative visionaries, XBIZ 2013’s lineup of A-list special guests will anchor the forward-thinking agenda, serving attendees tactical insight into the underlying dynamics and future direction of the industry.

The epicenter of XBIZ 2013 will be the luxurious Sofitel Hotel in Los Angeles, the hub of the industry events that will be the backdrop for the week of festivities that will reach its climax on Friday night, Jan. 11, at the 2013 XBIZ Awards, which will be staged at a new, ultra-exclusive venue to be revealed in coming weeks.

XBIZ 2013 will raise the bar for trade events with an extraordinary series of engagements designed to methodically probe the industry with the greatest minds in the biz today,” said Don Parret, executive director of publishing.

Dan Miller, executive managing editor, said that XBIZ for the first time will be introducing a lineup of sessions designed for content producers, performers and digital media distributors to define the future of the adult entertainment business.

Digital media and traditional video content now go hand-in-hand,” Miller said. “Because of the profound significance of that intersection, we feel the time has come for a specialized event that unites the entire community under one roof to interact, share insights and position their businesses for the future.”

Associate Publisher Sara Sazzman said XBIZ 2013 will be the ultimate forum to gain invaluable ideas, cultivate new relationships and conduct business.

“We are planning a phenomenal slate of events,” Sazzman said. “XBIZ 2013 will fuel the ultimate synergy between complementary market segments as we embark on an exciting new year.”

In addition, XBIZ 2013 will facilitate business between global markets, as attendees will descend upon L.A. from every corner of the world. The week also will feature numerous special events such as cocktail receptions and after-hours parties so attendees can unwind after a full day of doing business.

Events Director Moe Helmy, who has engineered XBIZ events both domestically and abroad and who built the XBIZ Awards into the biggest industry awards event of the year, is looking forward to directing a series of events beyond the breadth and depth of anything the industry has ever seen.

“We’re applying everything we’ve learned from producing standard-setting events during the past decade to this incredible week of festivities in January,” Helmy said.

Kristen Kaye, executive director of business development, said that XBIZ 2013 will redefine what industry professionals have to come to expect from trade events.

“We have never been about maintaining the status quo and that will never be more evident than with what we have planned for XBIZ 2013,” Kaye said. “We intend to create an all-encompassing extravaganza so elaborate in scope that it changes the way you view business events.”

Alec Helmy, XBIZ founder and president, said that he looks forward to XBIZ 2013 ushering in a new era in January.

XBIZ 2013 will be the Super Bowl of industry events,” Helmy said. “We look forward to delivering an exhilarating experience.”

James Deen Discusses Lead Role in ‘The Canyons’

James Deen told XBIZ he is not having sex with Lindsay Lohan, his co-star in the mainstream film The Canyons, which began shooting today at an undisclosed location in LA. But he did make out with Katy Perry, innocently, at a party last week.

“I’m not hooking up with Lindsay,” Deen said Wednesday, addressing tabloid rumors that the two already were romantically linked off camera.

However, Deen added, “I totally made out with Katy Perry. She was really drunk at some party, I was very sober. It wasn’t elaborate. We’re not having sex. She had cake on her face. It was the Fourth of July.”

Deen also assured that he isn’t having sex with Lindsay Lohan on camera for the film either.

“It’s not a porno, there is no actual sex in the movie,” said Deen, who has performed in close to 2500 hardcore sex scenes in the past eight years, including one for Elegant Angel on Wednesday.

There are sex scenes in The Canyons, he noted, but they won’t involve penetration.

“Every single scene is filled with plot points,” Deen said. “It’s not being shot like a porno. It’s not meant to arouse. The scenes are meant to move the story along.”

The 26-year-old porn actor from Pasadena, Calif., recently finished four days of intensive rehearsal for his Hollywood film debut. He was hand-picked by The Canyons screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis for the lead role of Christian, described as “a handsome, fit, power player and major manipulator” who enjoys filming himself having kinky sex.

Ellis is the notorious author of books such as American Psycho and Less Than Zero. His screenplay is being directed by Paul Schrader, who is best known for writing classics such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and American Gigolo, which he also directed.

Deen said the first day of rehearsal included the entire principal cast, Schrader and Ellis.

“The first day was just a table reading. Everyone that is involved read through the script and then we talked about it to see how we felt,” Deen explained. “Then the next day we started doing all the one-offs. They would pair us up, like we’d go over one scene with four people, and we talked a little about each scene and the characters. Paul Schrader talked with each actor about how they’re playing their role and about trying different things. It was really interesting and really beneficial.”

Deen said that he came away with a strong impression of Schrader after the rehearsal.

“I’m really impressed with him,” Deen continued. “I was warned by all these people. … There were rumors he used to sleep with a gun underneath his pillow, and ‘Paul does this’ and ‘Paul does that.’  But he has a way of communicating with each individual actor. The way he talks to me and the way he talks to the other actors is completely different. He’s really open. I think he’s an amazing director.”

The XBIZ Award-winning star said that he also was struck by how receptive Ellis was to the actors putting their own stamp on their roles.

“It’s kind of a treat to have the writer at the table reading,” Deen said. “Brett said the info is there, as long as the info gets related. He doesn’t have this attachment to his script.

Brett gave everybody a much more comfortable sense of the story and we know we’re not going to offend Brett by changing things. He cares about the info being portrayed. The thing with this movie is it’s noir. There are no big fight scenes. There are things that happen, but for the most part it’s a talkie. It’s noir. You’re showing emotions.”

Schrader and Ellis are teaming with producer Braxton Pope (Lionsgate) to finance The Canyons, billed as a contemporary thriller about “youth, glamour, sex and Los Angeles, circa 2012.”

The whole idea behind the movie is simply “a good group of people getting together to make something good for the sake of making something good,” Deen said.

“Money is not even the primary drive behind it,” he added. “They’re not trying to make a project to become billionaires off it.”

The former Starbucks barista said he feels “very comfortable” with his character of Christian.

“The fact that it’s a character that I really want to play makes it easier,” Deen said. “I feel pretty good about my attachment to the role and my interpretation of it.”

Still, he admitted to some pre-shoot jitters.

“I’m nervous, I don’t want to do a bad job,” Deen confessed. “When I’m doing porn, whether it’s Digital Playground scenes or parodies or something for [director] Eli Cross, I feel like even in porn, we all have an understanding that we want it to be good and we do the best we can. But there’s this understanding that no matter how important it is to us and how much we want it to be good, the project is not the acting, the project is the sex.

“If it comes down to good sex or good acting, we’ll take the good sex every time because we’re making adult films.

“So now it is a little nerve-wracking because with this, it’s just the acting for the first time. I’m leading a cast and I’ve never done something of that magnitude and I want to do a good job and I want to do well.”

Deen, who is profiled in this month’s issue of GQ, has received a remarkable amount of mainstream media attention this year, even without The Canyons. He is also going to be featured in Rolling Stone in an upcoming issue, doing a photo shoot last week for the piece in which the writer followed him around, including to one of his porn sets.

His profile will only continue to rise after The Canyons wraps and moves closer to being released. Deen said he’s ready.

“It’s good practice for [the XBIZ Awards],” he joked. “I think I’m actually going to walk the red carpet this year. And if I ever win an award again I can always go on stage. That’s the motivation.”
